Senior Director of Open Government and Public Safety at REIAs the Senior Director of Open Government and Public Safety at REI, John is tasked with bringing the best technical solutions and the best team to take on the clients’ toughest mission problems. Since joining REI as a Business Unit Lead in 2013, his work has supported various government agencies including the GSA, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice. John is surrounded by a team of highly talented technical and consulting leaders and he believes that his primary job is to unleash their full potential. The opportunity to make a real difference in the government (and in the lives of U.S. citizens), as well as the lives of REI staff, is truly what makes it the best job in the world.

With almost three decades in the industry, John has become an expert in IT consulting. From creating and serving as a director for the Postdoctoral Application Support System to serving as a principal at Booz Allen Hamilton just prior to joining REI, John truly understands IT beyond superficial terms and buzzwords. His industry peers commend him for his ability to combine technical depth with analytic rigor to inspire his teams and deliver for his clients. John leads via collaboration in nature; he believes that people at all experience all levels have fantastic ideas and he wants to hear them.

As the son of an itinerant petroleum geologist, John spent most of his childhood in countries such as Indonesia, Cameroon, and Algeria. He moved back to the U.S. to complete high school and attend the University of Virginia, where he received a bachelor’s degree as an Echol’s scholar. He later earned an MBA in IT and Operations from UVA’s Darden School of Business.

While focused on making a difference within the U.S. for his day job, John is a very active member of the global community, as well. Each year, he travels with a mission team to Haiti, where he serves as a translator and documents the impact of the volunteer organization’s investment in Haiti’s sustainable education system. He is inspired to make a change in people’s lives – not just by what he knows, but by what is innovatively possible.

In his spare time, John is an avid guitarist. He currently lives in Herndon with his wife, two children, and Guy, the feline ruler of the household.
