Shyam Salona is named an honoree in WBJ’s 2017 Minority Business Leader Awards

Sterling, VA – February 14, 2017 – The Washington Business Journal announced last week that Shyam Salona, CEO of REI Systems (REI), is listed as one of the winners of the 2017 Minority Business Leader Awards. Salona is one of 25 Greater Washington business leaders to be honored as part of the 10th class.

The 2017 Minority Business Leaders were selected by a panel of judges and the Washington Business Journal staff. The evaluation and results were based on nomination applications, which detailed the nominee’s milestones and accomplishments. Salona’s accomplishments began during his education — he holds two Master of Science degrees, one in Operations Research and one in Computer Science — and between his master’s programs, he was awarded a competitive scholarship to earn a postgraduate degree at the Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi). His accomplishments then continued into his professional career. Prior to forming REI, Salona worked for a government contractor in Maryland whose primary customer was NASA. There, Salona was one of four recipients of the NASA Space Act Award.

In 1989, Salona co-founded REI Systems with his friend and REI’s first president (and current executive chairman), Veer Bhartiya. REI’s work is mission-centric and its employees are passionate about delighting customers with Reliable, Effective, and Innovative solutions. One of Salona’s and REI’s proudest accomplishments is that REI continues to deliver solutions to NASA, the company’s first customer nearly 30 years ago. In 2016, Salona, who had had been serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, was named the company’s CEO.

“I’m very thankful for this recognition by the Washington Business Journal,” says Salona. “I am also thankful for all of the employees at REI Systems. Our determination and passion to succeed have led us to where we are today, and this win belongs to all of us.”

Salona and the other awardees will be honored on March 23 at MGM National Harbor.
